Aircraft An affordable aircraft loan from Northern Skies FCU will have you flying Alaska’s skies with a smile. Buying an aircraft can seem overwhelming, but in most cases it is a very simple process. Your first step is to complete a loan application. Once we have determined the amount of loan you are qualified for, the next step is to order a title search to verify ownership and lien information on the aircraft. Fees for a title search are usually between $45 and $50 and must be paid by the applicant. If you are a member of an organization such as the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), please let us know, as we may be able to order the title search through them at a discounted rate.

Once the proper verification of ownership and any liens have been determined, the next step will be to have the aircraft you are interested in appraised. The charge for a local appraisal is approximately $150 but may be more, depending on the location and specific details surrounding the aircraft.

If everything looks good at this point, the final step is your appointment for the loan closing. Usually both the buyer and the seller of the aircraft are present and sign documents needed to complete the loan. Documents to transfer ownership and register the aircraft with the FAA are also signed at this time. Fees for filing these documents are usually between $5 and $10.

Our policy does require that the aircraft be insured by both in-flight and hull coverage with a “Breach of Warranty” endorsement. The aircraft must be insured with coverage equal to or greater than the amount of the loan. The maximum deductible allowed for ground coverage is $1,000 for ground coverage and $2,000 for in-motion coverage. It is required that appropriate verification of insurance coverage be presented to the credit union before a loan closing can be scheduled.

Northern Skies FCU will loan up to 90% of the purchase price of a new aircraft and up to 85% of the appraisal of a used aircraft for a period of up to 144 months.
