New EMV Technology Coming Soon to Northern Skies
Soon, Northern Skies will be adding EMV chip technology to our credit and debit cards, providing heightened fraud protection to fortify your financial security. After the switch, your new card will have a chip and magnetic strip, allowing you to use it everywhere you used your old card.
What exactly is EMV chip technology? Well, it stands for Europay, MasterCard® and Visa® and it's actually a technology that has existed since the 1990s. The use of this technology overseas has shown to have a reduced rate of fraud, prompting a recent legislative push here in the U.S. In addition to still having a magnetic strip, EMV cards have a small chip embedded into the plastic. This chip secures data better than the magnetic stripe because it generates a unique, single-use transaction code with each payment. So, this means that in the event of a security breach at the point-of-sale, the data stolen from an EMV chip would not be able to be used to make additional purchases.
Many merchants will be upgrading their card readers to add EMV technology (similar to the image shown). When you get your new EMV card, we encourage you to "dip your chip" rather than swiping your magnetic stripe as this will add an additional layer of protection at checkout. We are looking forward to implementing this new technology by the end of the year. If you have any questions, we'd love to tell you more about it, so please let us know.
